cardboard sculptures

This body of work focuses on homelessness (now termed houselessness by the U.N.),housing issues and temporary dwellings, I felt cardboard was the ideal material due to it’s temporary nature when exposed to the elements and it’s existing connection with the houseless community.

My cardboard structures are designed using the basic shapes (circle, square, rectangle and triangle). I am also influenced by traditional dwellings such as the igloo, the tepee, the crannog and the more contemporary shanty houses of Calcutta and other developing world cities which are all made from materials readily available to their inhabitants. As cardboard is available in abundance to anyone living on city streets I feel my sculptures also represent possible designs to be used by the houseless community.

Although seen as cardboard shelters in an outdoor, urban setting, I want my sculptures to achieve an aesthetic appearance when viewed in a gallery setting. This idea of location changing meaning in sculpture is a core theme in my ongoing work.
