This is a proposal for a site specific public art project.
In line with my current work I would like to obtain small, unused spaces or small plots of larger spaces. The plots could be as small as 4ft x 2ft. The purchase of the sites is part of my concept and is intended to trace the legal process of transferring property ownership as well as proving that everyone can be a landowner.
Having obtained the sites I then intend to erect doorways or portals on each plot. The portals initially act as a marker of the place similar to ancient standing stones. The open portals invite the viewer to pass through them and into the space, activating the once redundant sites through their presence. With an open door or doorway representing an invitation as well as an opportunity this gesture is part of the overall concept.
Each site will contain a doorway or portal in some form although these will vary in size and form relative to the site in which they are placed. I want to stagger the siting of the sculptures to allow them to stand alone as individual sculptures before, together; they become part of the overall project.
Before any work is placed on a site I first want to have auctioneers sign put on each site, an advertisement for the property in the local paper and then publish an application for planning permission, also in the local paper. Despite the fact that these processes are officially unnecessary I want to use them to trace the processes that surround property ownership and development. These measures are part of the overall project’s concept to explore and use the official systems of the property market, though not in the official manner, and as such will be works in their own right. All these steps will also allow me to raise public curiosity around the sites and gauge public reaction to the project. Any public reaction will also assess the way that the public view land and land ownership and the importance land ownership holds in Irish communities.
